Research shows frequency and cost of motorcycle accidents

Motorcycles are a common sight on the road in Florida. Many people enjoy everything about riding a motorcycle including the freedom, the challenge, the excitement and the interest it generates in others. That aside, there is no denying that motorcycles can be dangerous.

With motorcycle accidents, the rider can suffer a variety of injuries or even death. Brain injuries, spinal cord injuries, broken bones, cuts and more are possible. This stems from the lack of protection that riders have, even if they wear protective equipment. Concerns about safety have gone beyond anecdotal and are being backed up by statistics.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration tracks statistics related to motorcycle accidents, including the results and economic effects. In an online report provided by the Insurance Information Institute, in 2015, for example, collected data states that there were about 88,000 motorcyclists injured. In the same year, just under 5,000 people were killed in motorcycle accidents. While these numbers actually represent a decrease from the year before, they are still rather stark.

In addition, according to the Government Accountability Office, the costs of these accidents in 2010 was an eye-opening $16 billion. Those costs include things such as property damage, lost wages, emergency services and other medical costs - but do not factor in long-term medical costs or legal fees. Thus, the frequency and impact of these accidents should not be understated.

With individual motorcycle accidents, one of the keys is to have a full investigation to determine how and why it happened. Drivers are notorious for disregarding safety with regards to motorcyclists, failing to yield to a motorcyclist's right of way or not even seeing them altogether. Those injured in a motorcycle accident may want to pursue compensation through a personal injury lawsuit.
