Wrong-way car accidents a problem

Car accidents can occur in Florida and throughout the country for a variety of reasons, but one of the most dangerous is if a driver is going the wrong-way on the road. While these types of accidents might sound unusual, they happen all-too frequently and cause injuries and wrongful death. When there is a crash and people are injured or killed due to a driver going the wrong-way on the road, it is important to understand how to pursue compensation in a legal filing.

There are approximately 400 fatalities due to a driver going the wrong-way in the U.S. annually. Florida has especially been affected by this. A large proportion of these crashes are head-on and lead to 81 percent of the fatalities in this type of accident. Law enforcement is particularly worried about these accidents and state that they are trying to find ways to reduce them.

Educating drivers and greater enforcement are steps being taken. In two Florida counties - Pinellas and Hillsborough - there were a total of 21 wrong-way crashes from 2014 to 2017. Not included in these are other wrong-way accidents throughout the area. The overall number of accidents is reducing. From 2014 forward, the installation of signs and arrows at many exits has taken place. There are lights that turn red if a driver is going the wrong way. Almost all realize what they were doing and turn around. Other tactics if the red light fails to stop wrong-way drivers is a camera that alerts authorities as it happens. Many drivers going the wrong way are under the influence, some by a substantial amount.

Since a wrong-way crash can be so deadly and those who are driving the right way on the road are largely powerless to avoid these car accidents, it is essential to understand what to do after the accident has happened. When there are injuries, there will be medical costs, lost time at work and other problems. With a fatality, the family will need to deal with everything surrounding the unexpected loss of a loved one. Having assistance from an attorney who is experienced in personal injury cases is vital to seeking compensation.
