Study: Children at great risk for car accidents near schools

With the new school year in Florida underway, parents will undoubtedly be concerned about the safety of their children. One of the most prominent dangers they will face is when they are on the way to school and cars, buses and other vehicles are also on the road. While law enforcement strives to make certain that drivers are cautious especially around school areas, that does not necessarily mean that all drivers will adhere to the law. One specific danger is distracted driving.

Studies seek to determine the precise dangers and a new study from Zendrive explains how risky it is for kids as they walk near schools. According to the study, one in three drivers are behaving in an unsafe manner while in school zones. This is frequently due to them using their cellphones behind the wheel. The study indicates that the most dangerous time for kids is between 4 and 5 p.m. Compared to mornings, afternoons are 40 percent more dangerous. Zendrive looked at approximately 75,000 schools across the nation to come to its conclusions.

Adding to the risk, one out of every 11 schools in the United States has a heavily trafficked road within 500 feet of it. For 4.4 million students, that increases the dangers they face. In addition, 88 percent of Americans stated that they used their phones while operating their vehicles. Since distracted driving has become so common an issue, the number of fatalities on the road has hit its highest level in five decades. In the study, Zendrive looked at phone use, drivers hitting their brakes hard and speeding up rapidly near schools. Miami-Dade County came in fifth among the worst counties for these issues.

Because use of a cellphone behind the wheel multiplies the chance of a crash by 20 and motor vehicle accidents are the leading cause of fatality for teens in the U.S., this is an obvious problem. Although there are attempts to increase safety, accidents will still happen. Those who have had a child involved in a crash near a school or anywhere else must understand their rights. Car accident can lead to significant medical costs, long-term damage and even wrongful death. When these are bicycle and pedestrian accidents - as there often are with children - it is worse than when it is a vehicle on vehicle crash. Speaking to a personal injury attorney can help with pursuing compensation through litigation.
