Bicycle and pedestrian accidents still prevalent in Florida

Riding a bicycle is a great activity for the individual's health, to save money and for the environment. However, Fort Lauderdale residents who are riding bicycles should be aware of the dangers they face when out on the road. A recent study says that bicycle riding in the state is even more risky that most people realize. Those who are in an accident while on a bicycle can face spinal cord injuries, head injuries and death. Understanding the costs associated with this is vital and often a legal filing is necessary to seek compensation.

The study, from the Governors Highway Safety Association, shows that the highest number of fatalities on bicycles from 2015 occurred in Florida at 7.4 percent. Overall, the number of people who are killed while riding bicycles is also increasing at 12.2 percent. This is higher than the number of traffic deaths in general. In years past, children were often killed in bicycle-car accidents. Now, adults are more vulnerable as the average age of people who were killed is 45.

A statistical analysis by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for the years 2008 to 2012 showed that the state had the most bicycle deaths in the continental U.S. Pedestrians are also at risk. Smart Growth America issued a report saying that the seven most dangerous metropolitan areas for pedestrians are in Florida. Distracted drivers are frequently to blame for these accidents as they are texting or using their cellphones for other activities.

Since bicyclists are so inherently vulnerable, any accident can cause severe damage and death. If the person survives, there is a substantial chance that there will be extensive medical treatment needed and perhaps, care 24 hours a day, seven days a week. This can put a major strain on the financial, emotional and practical lives of loved ones. With a fatality, there will be funeral costs and the reality of coming to grips with the unexpected wrongful death of a loved one. Discussing a legal case with a personal injury attorney experienced in bicycle and pedestrian accidents is the first step to being compensated.
