Multi-state initiative meant to cut down on car accidents

Enforcement agencies in Florida and throughout the nation are constantly seeking methods to reduce the risks that drivers face when out on the road. Research and information is valuable when determining what causes car accidents, motorcycle accidents, truck accidents and bicycle and pedestrian accidents. Armed with that information, it is not unusual for initiatives to be put into action to try direct methods in tamping down on certain behaviors. Such is the case with what is known as "Operation Southern Shield."

Operation Southern Shield is an attempt on the part of five different states in the Southeastern portion of the U.S. to look for certain types of drivers who are behaving dangerously and reduce the number of them on the road. The program will be implemented in Florida, Alabama, South Carolina, Tennessee and Georgia. Officers will be on the lookout for drivers who move at excessive speeds, are under the influence, are distracted, and do not wear their safety belts.

There will be more troopers on the road during the week in which this program will be in effect. The idea is not to punish these drivers, but to hammer home the point that the above behaviors are dangerous and drivers need to think twice before taking part in them. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has funded the extra patrols. The numbers indicate that the number of fatal accidents is increasing with a rise of 7 percent from 2014 to 2015. In four of the five states taking part, with Tennessee being the exception, there was an increase of traffic fatalities in those two years. The idea of staging this plan in July is due to the increased number of drivers who are on the road in the summer months.

The mere reality that five states have joined forces with funding from the NHTSA to reduce the incidences of these risky behaviors is indicative of how prevalent the problem is. Accidents can lead to injuries and death and with the number of methods in which drivers can be distracted, it is a growing problem on top of the previously known risks of speeding and failure to adhere to basic traffic laws. When there is an accident, it is imperative to have an idea as to how and why it happened. This information is a window into the commonality of driver behavior causing a crash. Considering the medical costs, lost wages and personal struggles that accompany a car accident, having legal assistance to seek compensation in a lawsuit is a must after suffering personal injury in an accident.
