Man visiting Florida killed in hit-and-run crash

Car accidents, bicycle and pedestrian accidents and more can happen at any time. When there is such an incident, those who were affected need to be aware of their right to seek compensation in a personal injury case. This is especially important if the accident results in a wrongful death.

According to recent news reports, a man from New Jersey who was visiting Fort Lauderdale with his family was hit by a vehicle and killed. The driver fled the scene in the car after the crash, police said. The man was taking a photograph of a sign when the accident occurred as the man's wife and 13-year-old son watched. Reports said the man was an émigré from Cuba in 1991 and had lived in the United States since then. Law enforcement conducted a search to find the vehicle and the driver. They found the vehicle, but as of this writing, they had yet to locate the driver.

The effects of a fatal accident can be significant and long-lasting for the victim's family. There will be funeral expenses, pain and suffering on the part of the family left behind, the need to come to grips in an emotional way with what happened, and the realization that the income and other contributions of the deceased loved one will no longer be there.

When a person is killed in an accident, the victim's family may be able to recover compensation for their financial losses through a wrongful death lawsuit. Similar to a personal injury lawsuit, a wrongful death lawsuit is intended to restore the family to the financial position they would be in had the accident never happened.

Recovering compensation after a hit-and-run accident can be more difficult than another type of accident, simply because the negligent driver did not stay at the scene. However, it's important to note that police have many ways to track down drivers who are responsible for a hit and run. What's more, fleeing the scene of a fatal accident is against the law.

Grieving families can speak to a personal injury attorney about their options for pursuing compensation.
