Why swimming pools can be dangerous

Swimming pools can be a wonderful source of entertainment. They can be very unsafe too, helping to turn a backyard party into a tragedy, or a fun-filled hotel stay into a situation where someone gets seriously hurt.

There are many ways in which swimming pools can be dangerous. Being aware of these risks can help you minimize these hazards.

Lack of supervision

It is surprising what “lack of supervision” can mean. It does not necessarily have to be, say, an adult who is watching a group of children swim and then darts into the house for five minutes to use the bathroom. It can also be a group of adults never actually deciding who supervises the kids. Each might assume someone else is watching over the kids, but it could be that no one is really attending to the children.

Adults might also assume that the kids in the pool know the rules. In reality, the adult(s) in charge should review pool safety rules such as no running around the pool and no diving. Also, the adult(s) supervising would ideally have training in CPR, first aid and the like.

Lack of barriers

Children love swimming pools, so if you move into a neighborhood where they are too easy to access, that is a risky situation. For example, there might be no self-closing, self-latching gate. There might not be a fence at all, or it may be too short. Similarly, the homeowners might leave their gate open all the time or not fix their broken lock.

Lack of swimming skills

The people who use swimming pools should have a certain level of swimming mastery. Unfortunately, many do not. A life jacket helps, but swimming lessons are invaluable.

A swimming pool tragedy can turn your life upside down. An attorney may be able to help you navigate the process of seeking compensation.
