Teen car accidents a rising problem, especially in the summer

Florida drivers and drivers throughout the nation must be vigilant as to the risks they face when they are out on the road. Certain factors are common with car accidents, and studies seek to find them and take steps to reduce their frequency. For those who have been in an accident, these factors can be important when considering a legal claim after the accident has happened.

One study conducted by AAA says that teens age 16 to 17 are three times as likely to be in a fatal accident when compared to adults. Compounding the danger of teens who fall into this category is that it is summer, and more accidents happen in the summer months between Memorial Day and Labor Day. In that specific time, the number of fatal teen accidents rises by 15 percent versus other times in the year. In the past five years, there were more than 1,600 deaths in accidents with these teens in the warmer months. The drivers' lack of experience and more of them being on the road has contributed to the number of accidents.

The statistics for inexperienced teen drivers age 16 to 17 broke down in the following way: they were 3.9 times as frequently in crashes as drivers 18 and older; they were 2.6 times as frequently in fatal accidents as drivers 18 and older; they were 4.5 times as frequently in accidents as drivers 30 to 59; and they were 3.2 times as frequently as drivers 30 to 59 to be in a fatal accident. The number of fatal teen crashes rose by 10 percent compared to the prior year. Another factor in these accidents is teen drivers operating their vehicles while they are distracted.

These numbers are worrisome for teens, their parents and those sharing the road with them. It is a reality that accidents are unavoidable regardless of the age of the drivers. When there is a car accident and a fatality, those whose lives have been affected by this need to know what to do in the aftermath of a wrongful death incident. Discussing a possible case with a personal injury attorney can provide information in how to seek compensation through a legal filing.
