Law enforcement steps up efforts to reduce Florida car accidents

Motor vehicle crashes in Florida sometimes happen in certain areas with greater frequency that they do in others. They also occur due to certain behaviors on the part of drivers. Research and the statistics that accompany it can give a warning sign to law enforcement that they need to take steps to try and reduce the number of car accidents, truck accidents and any other types of collisions in these particular areas and because of these behaviors.

Using the numbers, The Florida Sheriff's Association Task Force implemented Operation Hot Spot. This plan was to use resources in areas where there were high numbers of crashes. It was also used to get drivers to pay stricter attention to the road and avoid distracted driving since the plan coincided with April being a month dedicated to educating drivers on the risks of distracted driving.

The sheriff's officers went to intersections and areas in which there are significant numbers of accidents. Law enforcement sought to combine the goal of reducing the accidents with encouraging drivers to stop partaking in distracted behaviors. The Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (DHSMV) states that 12.2 percent of the accidents in Florida in 2015 were due to a distracted driver. In the intersections that were part of this endeavor, there were 210 accidents each week before enforcement efforts commenced. After the enforcement, that was cut to 103. More than 5,300 citations and warnings were given. 146 people were arrested.

These attempts on the part of law enforcement to reduce the number of accidents with greater vigilance and educational tactics to show drivers the dangers of driving while distracted are notable. The reduction in crashes indicates that it might even be effective. However, with the reduced number of accidents, it is important to remember that there were still more than 100 accidents in these locations and numerous citations, warnings and arrests. Accidents can lead to massive medical costs, lost time at work and even a wrongful death. Unfortunately, stopping them completely and ending the behaviors that cause them is all-but impossible. Therefore, those who were injured in a crash may want to speak to a legal professional about a personal injury lawsuit to be compensated.
