5 tips to keep you safe on your motorcycle

As you are cruising down the highway with the wind in your hair, ask yourself if you are truly prepared to be on a motorcycle. Riders are at an increased risk for certain injuries simply because they lack the protection that comes from a vehicle in an accident. Brain injuries, road rash and even death are common results of a motorcycle accident.

While other drivers should respect your right to be on the road, there are ways you can make it easier for them to see you and to protect yourself at a time when another driver is not being careful.

1. Always wear a helmet

Studies show that those who ride without helmets are 40 percent more likely to suffer a fatal blow to the head during a motorcycle crash. They are also three times as likely to deal with a serious brain injury after an accident. The evidence is in, and the fact is that you should always wear a helmet when you are riding.

2. Be educated

Even if you are an expert, there are always new things to learn. Before you take a new bike out on the road, participate in a motorcycle education course. Hone your riding techniques and learn strategies for staying safe on the road.

3. Prepare your bike to ride

Just like car malfunctions, bike problems can also cause an accident. Before you get on your bike, check areas underneath, tires, the coolant and hydraulic fluids, taillights, headlights and other signals for any defects that may affect your ride.

4. Ride defensively

Never assume that other drivers can see you. Keep your headlights on always, avoid blind spots, watch for vehicles that are turning and display your signal well before you make your move. Driving defensively can save your life.

5. Call an expert

Despite your best efforts, if you are injured while on your motorcycle because another driver was not paying attention, you may deserve compensation for your injuries. We encourage you to call an attorney immediately to discuss your case.
