Safety tips for tourists and Florida residents as pedestrians

Tourism is big business in Florida. Indeed, spring break brings scores of college students in March, but as the calendar turns to may, high school students from across the northeast celebrate their graduations or senior trips at Disneyland, Universal Studios and Busch Gardens, to name a few. In another month or so, families will have their vacations and another swath of out-of-state visitors will descend into Florida.

With additional tourists comes the possibility of pedestrian accidents. Both drivers and pedestrians should be aware of the following safety tips.

Pay attention to your surroundings – Indeed, you should know what’s going on around you regardless of whether you are driving or walking. As cell phone apps have become more popular, they have become distractions that could lead to accidents. So paying attention to your surroundings is essential to avoiding pedestrian accidents.

Cross at crosswalks – Walking all the way to a crosswalk may seem like a chore compared to crossing directly through a busy street, but this could be very dangerous; especially at night. Also, the legal protections pedestrians enjoy could be limited outside of a crosswalk.

Watch what you drink – Alcohol lowers a person’s inhibitions and they take chances that they normally would not take. Simply put, drunk drivers and pedestrians are more likely to be in accidents.

If you have been injured in an accident, you may be entitled to compensation. A conversation with an experienced personal injury attorney is an important step in recovering money for your injuries.
