Motorcycle accidents in Florida rise in frequency

Florida is a hotbed of motorcycle activity with many residents and visitors choosing to traverse the state on their bikes. While it is known that a motorcyclist can suffer from brain injuries, spinal cord injuries and a fatality when involved in motorcycle accidents, the actual statistics are even more troublesome. People who have had a motorcycle accident or had a loved one injured or killed in a motorcycle crash should be aware of these statistics, the aftermath of a crash and how to move forward with a legal filing if appropriate.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), Florida has the highest number of motorcycle crashes in the U.S. 2015 had the most motorcycle accidents ever recorded for the state with a 30 percent rise. Of all fatalities in a motor vehicle accident, 20 percent involved a motorcyclist. That is concerning, since only 3 percent of registered vehicles are motorcycles. There were more than 9,000 injuries and 600 deaths in Florida motorcycle crashes in 2015.

Because motorcyclists are so vulnerable to serious injuries in an accident, hospital treatment for riders cost more than $675 million. On average, each biker who was injured and hospitalized accrued bills of more than $83,000. Drivers of conventional vehicles are advised to keep a close watch on the road for motorcycles, pay strict attention to the road and avoid distractions, give bikers enough room, make sure to watch when executing left-hand turns as this is a common blind spot and circumstance in which there is a motorcycle-car accident and adhere to traffic laws.

When there is a motorcycle accident, the victim can have severe injuries that can prevent the ability to get back to work and live a normal life. The hospital costs, rehabilitation requirements and more can raise the overall expenses into massive amounts. If there is a fatality, the motorcyclist's family must learn how to move forward in all facets of life without their loved one. Since the number of motorcycle accidents is increasing, those who have been affected by such a crash should protect their interests by speaking to an attorney experienced in personal injury and wrongful death litigation.
