Research shows troublesome rise in Florida motorcycle accidents

Motorcyclists in Florida and throughout the U.S. will not hesitate to discuss how much they enjoy almost every aspect of being on their bikes and riding the open road. There is a sense of freedom for motorcyclists that is difficult to replace with any other activity. However, it is undeniable that riding a motorcycle can be dangerous. Given their vulnerability, riders are prone to suffering from spinal cord injuries, brain injuries, broken bones and even fatalities if they are in motorcycle accidents. Research into the number of motorcycle crashes is worrisome for Florida riders.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Florida has the highest number of fatal motorcycle accidents in the U.S. 606 people died in motorcycle crashes in 2015. This was a 30 percent increase from 2014. There were more than 9,000 accidents with injuries. Motorcyclists are aware of the numbers and believe that drivers of conventional vehicles are driving while distracted or simply not keeping an eye on their surroundings.

The number of fatalities by county went as follows: Miami-Dade had 67; Hillsborough had 48; Broward had 42; Palm Beach had 34; and Pinellas had 27. The NHTSA advises drivers to leave enough room for motorcyclists and respect their right to the road. It also advises motorcycle riders to wear safety equipment and a helmet. Unfortunately, some accidents are so serious that not even body armor and a helmet will provide enough protection to avoid injuries and death.

People who have been in a motorcycle accident or have lost a loved one in a crash need to understand what they are facing. With injuries, there will likely be a hospital stay, rehabilitation and the possibility of missed time at work. If the injuries are particularly severe, the person might require care 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. With a fatality, the family will be without a loved one who might have contributed in a myriad of ways. Because of the issues that can arise after motorcycle accidents, those who have been affected should discuss a potential legal filing after injuries or wrongful death with a personal injury attorney as soon as possible.
