A mystery has emerged just a few miles north of Fort Lauderdale in Delray Beach. That is where a horrific traffic accident claimed the life of an 82-year-old man who police say was doing nothing wrong. He was merely in the wrong place at the wrong time.
There is secrecy involving the actions of a pair of people who were apparently driving powerful cars at high rates of speed right before the crash. A man driving a Lamborghini was driving the car that slammed into the Buick driven by the 82-year-old. A woman, reportedly the girlfriend of the man in the Lamborghini, had been driving a yellow Porsche at the time of the fatal collision.
The pair had just spent a few hours having lunch and drinks, the man later told law enforcement officials. Investigators believe alcohol was a factor in the crash.
The woman refuses to speak with officials, however. In the moments after the late-afternoon accident, she apparently parked the Porsche at a nearby restaurant and left the scene; a scene that included the 82-year-old man dying inside his SUV.
A police spokesperson said officials wish the woman had called an ambulance and wish she had stayed to help the dying victim, but they do not know at this point if she committed a crime.
We also do not know if she committed a crime, or if her boyfriend committed one either. But we do know that in similar circumstances in which alcohol and speed are involved, the results are so often the same as here: tragedy.
People who have consumed alcohol before getting behind the wheel of a fast car too often believe they can handle the reduced reaction time available at high speeds. They too often believe that it is fun to exceed the speed limit and put the lives of others in danger.
