For the most part, the holidays are a festive time in Florida. There are many gatherings and parties and it gives many people an opportunity to celebrate and renew relationships with the people in their lives. It also happens to be a time when people tend to consume more alcohol than other times of the year. At many of these parties and gatherings, alcohol is available and can help one relax or get into the festive spirit.
The alcohol consumption can also lead to some bad choices as well. Some of these choices will end up in personal problems, others may end up in legal problems. One bad choice is drunk driving. When people do this it puts both the driver's life in danger as well as the other people on the road. Many car accidents are caused by drunk drivers every year in Florida.
In 2014, there were 16,873 car accidents where alcohol was suspected in Florida. 7,362 of those crashes involved injuries resulting in 11,210 injuries. There were also 780 fatal crashes where alcohol was suspected resulting in 849 fatalities. Alcohol use was confirmed in 5,660 of those crashes resulting in 459 fatalities and 3,387 injuries. In Broward County, there were 1,217 car accidents where alcohol was suspected, resulting in 45 fatalities and 890 injuries.
As one can see from the statistics, many people are hit by drunk drivers and as a result many people are killed or injured. These accidents can dramatically change the victim's life depending on the extent of the damage and/or injuries. Fortunately, victims of these accidents may be entitled to compensation, which can help with the damage to a vehicle, medical bills and lost wages.
As people celebrate the holidays in Florida, there may be many drunk drivers on the roads who can ruin anyone's holiday cheer. If they cause an accident and injure other people, they may be liable for the damages they cause. Experience attorneys understand how these accidents affect the victim's life and may be a useful resource.
