The Taser is a device designed to stun and shock an individual. Many police departments use them, including ones in Florida, as a way to attempt to take a target down with non-lethal force. However, Tasers can cause serious injury to those who are stunned. After a teenager suffered from brain damage after a Taser incident, his family's personal injury suit has recently been settled.
The details that caused the incident have not been made publicly available. It is not clear what the teen was doing that caused the police to be called. According to other deputies and officials, the officer fired the Taser at the teen after he supposedly acted in an aggressive manner and went into a fighting stance.
When the deputy Tased him, it caused the teen to fall and hit his head on the ground, causing the brain injury. The injury was reported as "serious," but the full extent of his brain injury is unclear. When a brain injury occurs, there is always the possibility that the condition will worsen over time, accruing large medical bills. So far, the teen's medical bills have already passed $1.3 million.
The county decided that it was in the best interest of both parties to settle the suit, and it was settled for $775,000. The settlement allowed the county to refrain from admitting any wrongdoing. Even though the county did not have to admit any wrongdoing, the brain damage suit is still a victory for the teen's family. Any successful personal injury suit in Florida as well as across the county could help reimburse families for medical bills as well as other damages deemed applicable.
